Enigma
The Ultimate Acoustic Experience
Out of southeastern Nebraska a new collaboration has formed which exhibits
all of the characteristics of a potentially legendary union. Introducing ...
Enigma - Carolyn and Dave - the ultimate acoustic experience. The partners, both possessing
an almost limitless musical vocabulary, have joined forces to create a truly
unique musical experience.
Musical duos are a mainstay of modern music. It’s difficult to acknowledge
the work of Paul McCartney without including John Lennon, or Stevie Nicks without
considering the input of Lindsey Buckingham, or Paul Simon without Art Garfunkel.
The bottom line is, sometimes the combined efforts of artists creates a product
greater than the sum of their parts. At times these artists are thrust together
out of necessity, sometimes by accident; regardless, their achievements have left
an indelible mark on the world of music.
"I see our purpose as being not to tear down or destroy the walls of musical genres,"
states Carolyn Olesen, main vocalist and percussionist, "but more of a concerted effort to
‘blur the lines’ of the perceived boundaries of styles. Dave plays with such a rich sense of
dynamics that I am able to really get inside the emotional context of each song, sometimes to
the point where the rest of the world seems to disappear, and nothing exists except for the music.
And I feel that I am able to draw the audience into the ‘moment’ of each song, as well."
Carolyn, a self proclaimed "incurable nomad", developed her vocal chops by being in "countless bands,
always searching for that ‘just right’ combination of freedom and discipline". Her voice is a unique
combination of passion, dedication, and experience. From the melancholy reminiscence of "At Seventeen"
by Janis Ian to the seething anger of Melissa Etheridge’s "Like the Way I Do," Carolyn pours her heart
and soul into every line.
Dave Epp hails from the Lincoln area originally and has spent over three decades in
the music business. A talented multi-instrumentalist, skilled in guitar, bass, mandolin,
saxophone and drums as well as vocals, he finds that the minimalist configuration of guitar
and voice actually allows greater freedom than what is to be had in a normal band setting.
"I’ve played in all sorts of groups, but Enigma gives me more leeway musically than I’ve
ever had before. The very act of distilling a song down to its barest essentials gives
me the ability to interpret the tune as I’m hearing it in my head at that very moment,
which is why no two Enigma shows are ever the same. And it‘s an added bonus working
with a vocalist such as Carolyn. She inspires me to play better, which hopefully, in turn,
improves her connection with the music."
Available for any type of function or occasion, with a repertoire second to none,
this is a musical group which should not be ignored. Enjoy!
